Turck – Tomorrow’s Industrial Integration Today.

Welcome to Industry 4.0

There’s a lot of talk these days about the fourth industrial revolution and how it is affecting businesses. Industry 4.0, as it has been termed, is changing the way that companies become and stay competitive. And while we at Turck are eager to discuss with you how your company can best take advantage of the revolutionary changes that are taking place, it helps to put things into perspective – to understand where we are in this ongoing process. And more importantly perhaps, how these global changes affect business. In other words:

How did we get here and where are we headed?

(A brief industrial revolution primer)

Industry 1.0

Part of the industrial revolution
1760 – 1840

From hand production to machines. From muscle power to steam and waterpower.
Started in textile manufacturing, then on to the iron industry, agriculture, and mining. Huge impact on society, creating an ever-stronger middle class.

Industry 2.0

Part of the technological revolution
1870 – 1914

Railroads and telegraphs bring us together, allow faster transfer of people, goods, and ideas, electricity enables factory modification and gives rise to the modern production line. A period of great economic growth, but led to high unemployment as many workers were replaced by machines in factories.

Industry 3.0

Part of the digital revolution
Later part of the 1900s

The invention and discovery of nuclear energy, the supercomputer, the transistor, the microprocessor. The rise of telecommunications and computers, space research and biotechnology. An era of high-level production automation thanks to programmable logic controllers and robots.

Industry 4.0

Now
Part of the fourth industrial revolution

This fourth revolution blends various technologies and blurs the lines between the physical, digital and biological. Automation and data exchange, machines augmented with wireless connectivity and sensors, systems that visualise entire production lines and make decisions on their own. Just as with the previous revolutions, industries all over the world will be dramatically affected, with transformation of entire production systems only a matter of time.

Each societal or industrial revolution has brough major changes to our world – and to the way we do business in that world. Revolutions provide fantastic opportunities for some, insurmountable obstacles for others. We’d like to help you ensure that you are successfully riding this wave, not being washed away by it.
